Exercise Bikes

Stationary bikes are great for many reasons, but mostly they take up very little room (as compared to some pieces of cardio equipment), and they allow you a great workout without as much impact as many traditional forms of cardiovascular exercise. Stationary bikes are easy to use and give you feedback that makes it easier to push yourself, see your progress and motivate you from workout to workout. And because there is not a lot of bouncing around when you ride a stationary bike, it makes it easy to watch TV or read a book while you workout. Perfect for people who want a great, straightforward workout, but don’t want the impact or jostling of full body activity.

Use of Exercise Bikes

  • Try doing pedal speed plays or resistance plays where you either increase your pedal speed (at a fixed resistance) for 30 - 60 seconds, or you increase your resistance (at a fixed pedal speed) for 30 - 60 seconds, then return to your starting pedal speed or resistance for 60 - 90 seconds. This will make the workout extra challenging, but also a lot of fun.
  • Try keeping your pedal speeds somewhere above 60 RPMs (revolutions per minute) and below 100 RPMs. This has been shown to be the ideal range for most people to burn the maximum number of calories.
  • Stationary bikes do a very good job of measuring your speed, distance and calories. So, use this information to compare your workouts from day to day and week to week. One of the most motivating things you can do on a stationary bike is to try to beat your distance from the workout before, or take your calories to a slightly higher calorie burn than the day before.

Benefits of Exercise Bikes

  • Stationary bikes provide an excellent workout and take up a minimal amount of space as compared to other pieces of exercise equipment.
  • Stationary bikes provide an excellent low-impact workout that not only strengthens the important muscles in the legs, thighs and butt, but also minimizes the risk of impact injuries on the knees, hips, ankles and feet.
  • Stationary bikes are great for people looking to lose or manage their weight because biking has been shown to provide excellent caloric expenditure
