Cardio vs. Strength

Cardio exercises are generally heart and lung based exercises like running. Cardio is short for cardiovascular or circulatory systems, which is an organ system that permits blood to circulate and transport nutrients (such as amino acids and electrolytes), oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones and blood cells to and from cells in the body. This nourishes the body and helps it fight diseases, stabilize body temperature and pH, and maintain homeostasis.

Some common cardio options include:

  • Outside: Running, biking, cross country skiing, etc.
  • Inside - Treadmills, incline trainers, treadclimbers, steppers, ellipticals, or bikes

Strength exercises are generally muscle building exercises, like weight lifting. Some common strength options include:

  • Outside – Run up very steep hills, carry objects, push-ups, chin-ups, etc.
  • Inside - Free weights, barbells, dumbbells or home gyms with free weights, weight stacks, power rods or cables
