Playing with Food

Playing with food is always a big component in our kitchen. We love good tasting, good for you foods. This helps me as an athlete, my kids grow stronger, and my family stay healthy. We enjoy getting creative with fruits and vegetables. A main staple in my diet is a protein shake post-workout. I thought I would share some of our favorites.

Pumpkin Pie

1 scoop vanilla protein

Pumpkin pie spice

Unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Pure pumpkin puree ( or butternut squash)

Blend with or without ice

Peanut Butter Banana

1 scoop protein powder (whatever flavor)

2 tablespoons peanut butter (or nut butter you choose)

1 banana

Vanilla of Chocolate unsweetened almond milk

*Note banana is usually partially frozen, can add ice

Pina Colada

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

2 tablespoons fine unsweetened coconut

Chunks of real pineapple

A few drops of rum extract and coconut extract

*You can also add frozen banana

Apple Pie

Vanilla protein

unsweetened applesauce

vanilla unsweetened almond milk

apple pie spice

ice cubes

PB and J

Vanilla or chocolate protein powder

Fresh or frozen unsweetened strawberries

2 Tablespoons peanut butter or nut butter of your choice

Milk of choice

Oatmeal Cookie

Vanilla protein powder

Vanilla almond milk

Gingerbread Cookie

Chocolate or vanilla protein powder

1 spoon molasses

Pinch of nutmeg

Vanilla almond milk

My protein shakes are usually on the simpler side. My kids like the ones that taste like cookies or PB and J. I have also added veggies. I am famous for sneaking pureed carrots into things and anything else I can get my hands onto. Butternut squash is lovely too.

In the summer freezing coffee into ice cubes and blending in vanilla protein with coconut extract with vanilla almond milk is awesome. We are dairy free so we often use almond or coconut milk but feel free to sub in milk of choice.

That's my fun spin on protein shakes that work in our kitchen. Enjoy!
